Bad Experiences, Good Lessons

I've always been paranoid when starting new things, and this paranoia has carried over into my business.
Every time I get a new client, my mind starts racing - trying to find all the ways I can mess up... or get screwed over.
A little paranoia in business isn't necessarily a flaw, it's a survival mechanism. But my paranoia isn't innate, it comes from a very specific client story...

An Expensive Lesson
A while back, I took on a client. Let’s call him Mr. X.
I had my doubts about taking him on as a client. His life story made him seem uncertain - he often changed professions in the blink of an eye. Even now, the website he wanted me to make was for a palm reading service...
But money is money. And especially when you're getting started in business, it's hard to say no.
He needed a website, and I was eager to deliver. He came across as polite, professional, and full of praise for my work.
“Man, you’re a lifesaver,” he’d say. “This site’s gonna be the backbone of my business.”
Felt good. Too good.
I built the site, poured hours into getting every detail just right. Even added a few Meta Ads in there After all, we'll need to advertise the site to get traffic, right?
After delivery, he told me: “I’ll call you back in a few weeks to talk about next steps and improvements. We’ll get everything sorted.”
But that call never came.
What did come? Radio silence.
Meanwhile, he launched the site. Ran it like he owned the damn thing (because technically, he did). And you know what he didn’t do? Pay me.
Yep. I was out $600, left with nothing but an invoice and a sour taste in my mouth.
The Hard Way
Moral of the story?
You cannot make a good deal with a bad guy. Doesn’t matter how good your pitch is, how slick your process is, or how well you think you “read people.” Some folks are just out to screw you over.
Why I Vet Every Client Like My Life Depends on It
These days, I don’t just take clients—I choose them. Before we even get started, we have a conversation. We make sure we’re on the same page, that there’s trust, and that they’re not a repeat of Mr. X.
If I get the slightest hint of bad vibes? I’m out. Doesn’t matter how much they’re willing to pay.
Because here’s the thing: life’s too short to deal with scumbags.
